Stropharia hornemannii — Luxuriant Ringstalk — Strophariaceae


Medium to large mushroom. Convex to obtuse cap maturing to planar or umbonate, viscid when moist, but otherwise dry, veil remnants on margin, grayish-brown to reddish-brown, fading with age. Gills attached, pale gray aging to purple gray or nearly black, close. Stalk as tall as cap diameter, equal, smooth above ring, cottony white scales below. Veil white, leaving a persistent skirtlike ring, darkened by spores. Saprophytic.
 
Habitat: Solitary to scattered or small groups, rotting wood beneath conifers.

Scent: Somewhat foul

Spores: Purple-brown to Purple-black

Season: Summer to Autumn
